DVD-dates -When you want a quiet evening in.

A few of my friends and I used to have this ritual on Friday nights: Wed go to The Frypan for some fried chicken followed by Sun Mart for some wine, market-O brownies and popcorn, and then on to Take 5 DVD-bang.

The DVD-bang is a building where you can rent a dvd and then go watch it in a room with a huge, comfy sofa, some blankets, a big screen and surround sound. Take 5 had a good selection of DVDs to choose from: Chick flicks, horror movies, art movies,.. That was usually the part of the night that took the most effort: Deciding what to watch. Especially in a mixed group. Not all girls are comfortable with horror movies and most guys are anti-chick flicks.. But once we got that out of the way, it was always good fun.

Because most young Koreans stay with their parents until they get married, Korean couples need to find creative places to do the nasty and, unfortunately, the DVD-bang is apparently ideal. This has earned them a bad reputation. A lot of the times, when you tell a Korean friend that you are going to a DVD-bang, they will pull up their noses and say: oh, really?

The last time I went to Take 5, was about 4 months ago. It was just myself and one of my guy friends. Since we usually went there in a group, I guess the owner / manager figured that we too wanted some alone time. He took us to a room right at the end of the corridor and told us (repeatedly): Last room. Very quiet. No another people. All of this while wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. We had a great giggle about that.

I miss Friday night DVD-bang...
